JEDDAH
— “We want the Saudi youth, both male and female, to excel in engineering and scientific education," said Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Youbi, rector of King Abdulaziz University.

The head of Saudi Arabia’s prestigious university was addressing students and faculty of Rabigh Engineering College on Monday on the occasion of obtaining accreditation from ABET, the prestigious US-based organization that monitors global standards in technical education.

It is expected that the engineering graduates of the Rabigh college will now have increased acceptability in the Kingdom and also in the global workplace, especially in multinational corporations, because the ABET accreditation is recognized worldwide through international agreements, Al-Youbi said.

In many countries, the national accrediting systems are based on the ABET model.

Al-Youbi commended the college for attaining ABET certification and said it positively reflected on the quality of education at the institution. He hailed the faculty and students of the engineering college, which has so far attained five various international citations. However, he emphasized that simply attaining international recognition for academic performance was not enough and the students must continuously strive to achieve success in innovative engineering concepts.

Al-Youbi said the Rabigh college was one of the pioneering arms of KAU, which consistently seeks to sharpen the skills of its students.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Shahri, dean of the engineering faculty, recalled the difficulties encountered by the college when it began functioning in 2014. He said the current achievements of the college were made possible only by the support of its students and staff members.

At the end of the celebratory event, Dr. Salman Al-Zabali delivered the ABET certification. A documentary film about the college was screened. Outstanding students and faculty members were honored by the dignitaries on the occasion.

The ABET is a non-profit organization, recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), accrediting college and university programs in applied science, computing, and engineering.

It is governed by its 33 member societies, who nominate and appoint members of the ABET Board of Directors, the Accreditation Commissions, and board-level councils. ABET has been providing accreditation services and quality assurance leadership for technical education programs in higher education for nearly 80 years. It currently accredits over 3,400 programs at nearly 700 colleges and universities inside the United States and worldwide.
